From generation to generation

Our story

Maori Healers was founded in 2000 to preserve the knowledge of our whakapapa (ancestors). We honour our heritage by continuing to practise and teach traditional Maori healing philosophies and practices.

The main founders were Papa Joe Delamere and Manu Korewha (now deceased) and Atarangi Muru. There are other notable persons to acknowledge; Morningstar and Michael Henry, Gary Douglas, Anna Verwaal, Paul Ferra and Melissa Oliver, Meadow Carder, Jim Dietrich – who gave us grounding and depth in our first travels.

We believe the greatest healer in your life is you.

Atarangi’s mission

Atarangi, Maori Healer’s senior healer, was raised in the small coastal village of Ahipara and is affiliated to Ngati Kuri, Te Aupouri and Te Rarawa tribes. Her name translates as ata (dawn) rangi (light) and in the old language means ‘the realisation of one’s visions’ (Naida Pou attributed the korero). Atarangi’s drive in the work is the growth and support of people wanting to heal themselves and their whanau/family.

Her passion for the healing arts was ignited by her elders where her training began at an early age, as it did for many in those times. Atarangi was taught by many kuia (elder women) and koroua (elder men), as is the traditional method.

Today she passes these healing arts forward to her children, grandchildren, and her extended family both biological and spiritual.

Atarangi is dedicated to establishing a world-class marae where the self-healing arts and customary Māori practices can be taught.
